<p>I take regular blood tests as a factor of my employment. In the past, I&#8217;ve had high cholesterol and triglycerides. <p>So, what was the result so far?</p>
<p>My triglycerides dropped over 26% in 3 months!<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-165" src="http://fishoilomega3.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Eyesight.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="130" />A study by a research team at Children&#8217;s Hospital Boston, which was just published in the journal <em>Science Translational Medicine</em>, shows omega-3s help to prevent retinopathy &#8212; an eye disease caused by out-of-control growth of tortuous, leaky blood vessels in the retina. Retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness affecting many premature infants and over 4 million adults in the U.S. with diabetes (and scientists predict that number will double over the next 15 years).</p>
<p>Over 7 million Americans have another disorder that leads to vision loss, called age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cases of AMD, like retinopathy, are expected to skyrocket as the population ages. Just as retinopathy is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth, so is the most common form of AMD (known as &#8220;wet&#8221; AMD). And omega-3s appear to halt AMD, too.</p>
<p>That means increasing food sources of omega-3s in the diet (such as salmon and walnuts) and/or taking supplements of the essential fatty acid could dramatically reduce the loss of vision and related suffering in millions of people. It could also save an enormous amount of money in healthcare bills.</p>
<p><em><strong>&#8220;The cost of omega-3 supplementation is about $10 a month, versus up to $4,000 a month for anti-VEGF therapy,&#8221;</strong></em>ophthalmologist Lois Smith, MD, PhD, senior investigator on the study, said in a statement to the media. She was referring to drugs such as Macugen and Lucentis used in AMD and diabetic retinopathy. &#8220;Our new findings give us new information on how omega-3s work that makes them an even more promising option.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://fishoilomega3.co.uk/fish-oil-supplement-reviews/health-spark-omega-3-fish-oils-1000mg-90-capsules/">Omega-3 fatty acids</a></strong> are now known to be highly concentrated in the retina. Previous animal studies have shown omega-3s can prevent retinopathy. The new study reveals exactly how the essential fatty acids protect the eyes &#8212; and it also strongly suggests that omega-3s may be beneficial in diabetes.</p>
<p>The researchers have documented that omega-3s have a direct effect on blood vessel growth (angiogenesis). In fact, omega-3s selectively promote the growth of healthy blood vessels and halt abnormal vessels from growing.</p>
<p>Dr. Smith and her colleagues were able to isolate the specific compound in omega-3s that produces these beneficial effects &#8212; a metabolite of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, known as 4-HDHA &#8212; and the enzyme that produces it (5-lipoxygenase, or 5-LOX). The study demonstrated that 5-LOX acts by activating the PPAR-gamma receptor, the same receptor targeted by Big Pharma drugs in the &#8220;glitazone&#8221; class such as Avandia, that are prescribed for people with type 2 diabetes to increase their sensitivity to insulin.</p>
<p>However, Avandia and related medications increase the risk for heart disease. So it appears that boosting omega-3 intake through diet or supplements might be a safer way to improve insulin sensitivity in patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes.</p>
<p>Dr. Smith is currently working with investigators at the National Eye Institute who are conducting an ongoing multi-center trial of <a href="http://fishoilomega3.co.uk/fish-oil-supplement-reviews/health-spark-omega-3-fish-oils-1000mg-90-capsules/">omega-3 supplements</a> in patients with AMD. The trial, dubbed AREDS2, will continue until 2013. An earlier retrospective study, (AREDS1) already found a higher intake of omega-3 containing fish was associated with a lower likelihood of AMD.</p>

<p>According to one expert, many consumers of these supplements may actually be wasting their money because there might be no help or benefit in the supplements.</p>
<p>The poor quality of many supplements is enough to cause major concern as one expert of Omega-3, <a href="http://">Dr Alex Richardson</a> put it. She works with charity Food &amp; Behavior Research. She is also one of the most renowned researchers of omega-3</p>

<p>One of the problems that occur is that supplements contain very little <strong>EPA and DHA</strong>, or even non at all. She says that although there are many types of omega 3 supplements, not all of them are beneficial to the body.</p>
<p>In addition to that fact, to date, there is no daily recommended dose that one can bank on taking and therefore people either take far too little or far too much.</p>
<p>If you take a pill every morning so that you can boost your brain power, you might be very far from the truth. There is not much that it can do for you. Dr Richardson thinks that there is enough confusion over this  and in fact says that taking a full meal of sea food or <strong><a href="http://fishoilomega3.co.uk/fish-oil-supplement-reviews/health-spark-omega-3-fish-oils-1000mg-90-capsules/">fish oil</a> is better for giving one the much needed EPA and DHA</strong> which are the most essential fatty acids.</p>
<p>There is no doubt that omega-3 is indeed good for keeping cardiac disorders at bay. As well as preventing stroke. It is also good for inflammations like arthritis and it also improves eyesight. What is not very well established is it is vital for our brain power and alertness. Health surveys have shown that almost 90% of Britons do not get enough of what they need to stave a heart attack that is about 500mg in a day. Where could they get enough of them to support brain power and the mental well being which requires about l000mg/day?</p>
<p>Of course it goes without saying that the best way to get nutrients into your body is to get it from food. Therefore you should have about four servings of fish in a week and at least one of them oily. If this is not possible, maybe a supplement is going to be better than nothing at all.</p>
<p>The question now is how you are going to know that you have got the right supplement pill if your decade on using them.</p>
<p>Because there is non official endorsement in the number of  pills  you  should take at one serving, then it is important that you only take the ones  that have got EPA or DHA  in them. Well, there is no way of proving it but again, anything is possible, right?  This means that <strong>you should take none other than fish oils because vegetarian oil contains linseed or flax seed oil which contains an entirely different form of omega-3</strong>.</p>
<p>To you they would be a complete wastage of money but if you are a vegetarian, then perhaps you should consider taking the supplements that have EPA from algae.</p>
<p>Ignore also all the doses that have been suggested on the packet and remember that there is no official recommended dose for these supplements in the market today. Just get to the fine print and see how much EPA is contained so that you can know how many helping you might take for the essence.</p>
<p>For example, for the much targeted mental well being, it is recommended that you take about 1000mg/day. This will mean that to get to this level with pills, you had better exceed the limit that the manufacturer has set for you.</p>
<h3>Don&#8217;t waste your money</h3>
<p>Do not even think about going for the other combination that tells you of omega 3, 6, and 9. The thing to always recall here is that your body too does produce its own omega 9 fatty acids and therefore what you should get from pills and diets is what your body does not produce. Omega 6 is also found in many other plant sources like avocado, nuts, seeds and dairy products. In meat and eggs too you will find varied quantities. All things considered, perhaps we should be thinking ore of ways to reduce the content of omegas in our body rather than how we can increase it.  A high in omega 6 in your body is linked to bad conditions like allergies, cancer and heart conditions.</p>
<p>Dr Richardson had assessed a few brands in the market of omega-3 fish oils and what she found; she rated according to quality of the oils and the rate at which they are absorbed in to the system. There were many other factors that are also considered.</p>
<p>First there are 3 types of fish oils. There is the most expensive variety which is ultra refined oil. This is pharmaceutically prepared and most likely it has the lowest number of impurities</p>
<p>It is also highly concentrated with all the nutrients and in the process of packaging. All fishy taste is removed from the oil. This is what most people call a side effect in the other oils.</p>
<p>In the next categories, you will find the concentrated which are a little more basic in comparison to super oils said above.  Although they do not have as much EPA and DHA they are still a lot better than the last category of the basic oils. They are also home to some of the pollutants but again, only in small quantities. These are like lead and mercury.</p>

<p>Value: Don&#8217;t rely on the number of gels per bottle since some brands contain less omega-3&#8242;s per capsule. This Evolution Slimming&#8217;s krill oils contain <strong>230mg omega-3 per gel.</strong> And make sure it&#8217;s per gel since some supplement facts list per serving which can be two gels. What I did was divide the price by total amount of omega-3&#8242;s in the bottle to get a price per gram. To get the best value, make sure you get <strong>free shipping</strong>, and usually the bigger bottles are cheaper per unit. I know that the benefits of krill oil is more than omega-3&#8242;s, this was just a basic calculation.</p>
<p>Taste: One reason why people don&#8217;t get fish oil is because they can&#8217;t stand the taste of it. I can say that <strong>krill oil does not have any fish oil taste</strong>. If you simply swallow the gel cap, you don&#8217;t get any krill taste at all. I crushed one krill oil capsule in my mouth just to see what that tasted like, and it tastes like dried shrimp, or shrimp paste, and not much after taste. It&#8217;s a very small capsule about 1/2 the size of regular adult fish oil capsules so it should be easy to swallow.</p>
<p>There isn&#8217;t any doubt that omega-3 oils are good for you. <p><em>&#8220;Starting with a healthy diet and keeping it throughout life may provide better protection than waiting until later when you are more at risk,&#8221;</em> senior researcher Dr. Lotte Lauritzen of Copenhagen University in Denmark said.</p>
<p>Fish oil has been shown to help lower blood pressure in adults with high blood pressure and to have beneficial effects on cholesterol levels. Lauritzen and colleagues wondered if fish oil&#8217;s benefits might be seen during the rapid growth period of adolescence.</p>
<p><span id="more-60"></span></p>
<p>She and her team recruited about 80 slightly overweight Danish kids between the ages of 13 and 15, and randomly divided them into two groups: one received daily doses of fish oil (1.5 grams, or as much as one and a half soft gels) and the other equivalent amounts of vegetable oil (the placebo). The oils were infused in bread, masking any fishy taste and blinding the kids to their assigned group.</p>
<p>After the 16-week study, the researchers noted that the <strong>kids consuming fish oil laced bread had 3.8 mm Hg lower systolic pressure (the top reading) and 2.6 mm Hg lower diastolic pressure</strong> (the bottom reading), compared to the placebo group.</p>
<p>In adults, a drop in blood pressure of 3 mm Hg corresponds to at least a 15 percent reduction in the risk of stroke, they point out.</p>
<p>Blood pressure in early life has been shown to track into adulthood, with children and adolescents with high blood pressure more likely to suffer from high blood pressure later in life. This happens either by diet and exercise habits carried over time, or a &#8220;programing&#8221; that takes place in the body, the researchers explain in The Journal of Pediatrics. Most of the boys in the current study had blood pressure within the normal range.</p>
<p>The researchers also evaluated other heart disease risk factors, including blood sugar levels, insulin and cholesterol. While they found a slight change in HDL cholesterol (the &#8220;good&#8221; cholesterol) and non-HDL cholesterol &#8212; both were higher in the fish oil group &#8212; no other differences emerged.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that the fact that the other were not significant means that fish oil doesn&#8217;t benefit them,&#8221;</em> Natalie Riediger, a PhD student at the University of Manitoba in Canada and lead researcher on a recent review of fish oil&#8217;s role in health and disease, told.</p>
<p>Riediger explains that the study used a more &#8220;realistic&#8221; dose of fish oil than studies that may have found changes in more risk factors. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s practical for people to consume 10 capsules per day as described in other studies,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>Also, the vegetable oil used in the placebo bread contained a small amount of the same heart-healthy <a href="http://fishoilomega3.co.uk/goto/omega_3_fatty_acids_that_were_in_the_fish_oil/60/2">omega-3 fatty acids that were in the fish oil</a>, which may have weakened the resulting differences between the two groups.</p>
<p>Regardless, the influence on blood pressure alone may confirm Lauritzen&#8217;s hunch: cardiovascular function is susceptible to fish oil&#8217;s effects during growth spurts. &#8220;There&#8217;s something going on,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And more research is needed.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Her advice for now: &#8220;Give children good food habits early, including a taste for fish&#8221;</strong></p>

Recent studies suggest that statins, the traditional medications for reducing cardiovascular event risk, have minimal effect in CKD or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. <h3>Importance of Omega-3&#8242;s</h3>

<h3>Clinical trial evidence</h3>
<p>Several trials have used omega-3 supplements as a treatment to test this hypothesis. One randomized, double-blind intervention trial investigated whether omega-3 fatty acids, used as a secondary prevention treatment, would reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events and death. The study population included 206 patients randomized to either two capsules containing a total of 1.7 g of omega-3 fatty acid or identical placebo capsules for 24 months. The primary outcome of this study was a composite of acute myocardial infarction (MI), angina pectoris requiring coronary investigation or intervention, stroke, transient ischemic attack, peripheral vascular disease requiring surgical intervention, or death.  The researchers found no significant difference between groups in the composite outcome, but the omega-3 fatty acid group had significantly fewer MIs than the placebo arm (4 vs. 13). The two groups had similar rates of significant adverse events.</p>
<p>In a secondary analysis by the same group, significant differences were observed in lipid concentrations. In this analysis, after three months of supplementation, 103 members of the treatment group had a significant decrease in serum triglycerides while no change was observed in total cholesterol, high- and low-density cholesterol or Lp(a) or apoprotein B.</p>
<p>In another randomized, double-blind study, 33 ESRD patients took either over-the-counter fish oil supplements containing eicosapentaenoic acid (0.96 g/day) and docosahexaenoic acid (0.6 g/day) or corn oil (controls) for six months. The two groups had similar baseline characteristics. At six months, investigators observed no significant difference between the treatment and control groups in Lp(a) level, the primary outcome. The results of this study may be due to a lack of power in the sample or the lower dose of omega-3 fatty acids used for treatment.</p>
<h3>Benefits for dialysis patients</h3>
<p>The available studies do not provide enough evidence to recommend omega-3 supplements for all patients on dialysis. These data do hint that<strong> omega-3 fatty acid supplements lower serum lipid concentrations and may be effective in reducing the incidence of MIs</strong>. However, additional well controlled and well-powered studies will need to be conducted to determine which patients are most likely to benefit from omega-3 fatty acids and the optimal dose. <p><em>&#8220;In our experiment, we used &#8216;knockout&#8217; mice that lacked the gene responsible for an enzyme important in making docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In the absence of DHA, male mice are basically infertile, producing few if any misshaped sperm that can&#8217;t get where they need to go,&#8221;</em> said Manabu Nakamura, a U of I associate professor of food science and human nutrition.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;We looked at sperm count, shape, and motility and tested the breeding success rate, and the mice lacking DHA simply were not able to breed,&#8221;</em> said Manuel Roqueta-Rivera, a U of I doctoral student who also worked on the study.</p>
<p><span id="more-35"></span></p>
<p>In the DHA-deficient knockout mice, sperm counts were extremely low. The sperm that were produced were round instead of elongated and they were unable to move well, he said.</p>
<p>But, <strong>when DHA was introduced into the diet, fertility was completely restored. &#8220;</strong>It was very striking. When we fed the mice DHA, all these abnormalities were prevented,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>This is the first time that <strong>the importance of DHA to male fertility has been shown</strong> this directly, although some studies have suggested that male fertility patients with low sperm counts and less motile sperm tend to have low levels of this fatty acid.</p>
<p>The DHA study is part of the Nakamura team&#8217;s efforts to understand the function of the omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. As part of that work, they have developed a mouse model to help them understand a particular fat&#8217;s physiological role. By knocking out genes, they can create deficiencies of the fats they are interested in and learn about their functions.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Knocking out the gene for the delta-6-desaturase enzyme has led to some surprising discoveries, including this one about the importance of DHA in sperm formation and mobility,&#8221; </em>he said.</p>
<p>Nakamura said our body must make DHA from dietary alpha-linolenic acids, the parent compound of the <strong>omega 3 fatty acid</strong> family. Vegetable oils, including soybean and canola oil, are good sources of alpha-linolenic acid.</p>
<p>Nakamura&#8217;s team plans to continue focusing on this omega 3&#8242;s effects on fertility. But he cautioned that there are still things they don&#8217;t understand.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;We get hints from looking at sperm in the DHA-deficient animals about what type of pathology we may be looking at and why these polyunsaturated fatty acids are important. But we&#8217;re still at the starting point in understanding the mechanisms that are involved, and we need to do more research at the cellular level,&#8221;</em> he said.</p>
<p>The study was published in the February issue of the Journal of Lipid Research. Co-authors with Roqueta-Rivera and Nakamura are Chad K. Stroud, Wanda M. Haschek, Sandeep J. Akare, Mariangela Segre, and Rex A. Hess, all of the U of I, and Richard S. Brush, Martin-Paul Agbaga, and Robert E. Anderson, all of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.</p>
